Florida flight returns to Cuba after birds cause engine fire

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP)– A Southwest Airlines flight to Florida from Cuba was required to reverse Sunday after it struck birds that triggered an engine to ignite and fill the cabin with smoke, the airline company stated. No injuries were reported.

Southwest Airlines flight 2923 left José Martí International Airport in Havana en path to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Sunday afternoon. The airplane “experienced bird strikes to an engine and the airplane’s nose,” the airline company stated in a declaration.

A guest informed WSVN that the effect sent out fumes through the plane and triggered emergency situation oxygen masks to release.

” It resembled a burn odor, and it was injuring my face. My eyes got genuine red, my chest began to burn,” Steven Rodriguez stated.

The pilots securely went back to Havana, where the 147 travelers and 6 team members left the airplane on slides, the airline company stated.

The airline company bused travelers and team members to the airport and put the travelers on a various flight to Fort Lauderdale, the airline company stated.
